Prof. Michael Gehrke (Opera)
Professor Michael Gehrke teaches vocal studies at The University of Music FRANZ LISZT Weimar. He is guest professor in China, at the music conservatories in Shenyang and Xi'an. He was also invited to teach at the Harbin Normal University School of Arts as a visiting professor, and at the Shanghai Conservatory of Music. In 2013 he was part of the World Famous Lecturer Program at the National University of Beijing. Together with Professor Uecker (Former director of the Semperoper Dresden), he teaches twice a year at The International Academy of Music in Munich and gives masterclasses.
As a stage and concert singer of lyric tenor repertoire, he sang in many countries in Europe, Africa, South America and the Middle East. He also made a number of radio recordings with most German broadcasters, the ORF and the Israel Broadcasting Corporation. He sang in numerous international Festivals, such as the Schleswig Holstein Music Festival, the Abu Gosh Festival in Jerusalem, the Mozart Festival in Würzburg, the Festival of Ancient Music in Herne, the Festival Mitte Europa, the Music Festival Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, etc.
His repertoire focused on lyrical Mozart works. However, he also selected works of young dramatic tenors including Titus (Mozart Festival Cluj, Romania), Don José (Berlin Philharmony) and Parsifal. He also appeared on stage with works from the 20th century and contemporary music. His concert repertoire ranges from the 16th century to 21st century, including the evangelist of Bach’s oratorios, Verdi Requiem and The Song of the Earth by Mahler.
Michael Gehrke received his training from The Academy of Music in Lübeck under the guidance of Ute Niss, where he graduated with a Concert Exam certificate (with distinction). From Ute Niss he learned the educational foundations of the internationally renowned vocal school of Martienssen and Lohmann based in turn on the method of Garcia. His impetus of his studies was spurred on by Arleen Auger, Elisabeth Schwarzkopf, Aldo Baldin, Lore Fischer, Pavel Lisitian, Thomas Thomaschke, Leonard Hokanson, und Helmut Rilling. For a period of over seven years, his career was guided by Nicolai Gedda.
Professor Gehrke has been teaching and sharing his knowledge through academic forums for fifteen years. He continues to share his educational knowledge of vocal pedagogy and his own stage and concert experience. His students sing at many German-language theatres such as the Vienna State Opera, The Deutsche Oper Berlin, The Zurich Opera House etc. They are internationally highly applauded singers (CDs with Sony Classical and Harmonia Mundi). Some of them dedicate their time to academic work. Two of his formers students who graduated with a concert exam, are also singing professors respectively in China and Korea.
Michael Gehrke lehrt als Professor an der Hochschule für Musik Franz Liszt in Weimar. Als Gastprofessor wurde er an die Konservatorien in Shenyang und Xi’an, als Visiting Professor an die Normal University Harbin School of Arts und an das Shanghai Conservatory of Music eingeladen. Er war Dozent im Wold Famous Lecturer Programm der Nationaluniversität Beijing. Zweimal jährlich unterrichtet Michael Gehrke gemeinsam mit Prof. Uecker (ehemals Intendant Semperoper) an der Internationalen Musikakademie München.
Seine künstlerische Tätigkeit als Bühnen- und Konzertsänger führte den lyrischen Tenor in viele Länder Europas, nach Afrika, Südamerika und in den Mittleren Osten. Rundfunkaufnahmen entstanden bei den meisten deutschen Rundfunkanstalten, beim ORF und bei der Israel Broadcasting Corporation. Er war Gast bei internationalen Festivals, wie dem Schleswig Holstein Musik Festival, dem Abu Gosh Festival in Jerusalem, dem Mozartfest Würzburg, dem Festival für Alte Musik Herne, dem Festival Mitte Europa, den Musikfestspielen Mecklenburg Vorpommern, u.a.
Das lyrische Mozartfach bildet den Schwerpunkt im Opernrepertoire von Michael Gehrke. Aber auch ausgewählte Partien des jugendlich-dramatischen Faches gehören dazu, wie Titus, Don José und Parsifal. Als Opernsänger gastierte er auch in Werken des 20. Jahrhunderts und der zeitgenössischen Musik. Das Konzertrepertoire von Michael Gehrke hat eine große stilistische Bandbreite mit Kompositionen vom 16. bis zum 21. Jahrhundert, darunter die Evangelistenpartien der Bachschen Oratorien, Verdi Requiem und Lied von der Erde.
Ausgebildet wurde Michael Gehrke bei Ute Niss an der Musikhochschule Lübeck. (Konzertexamen mit Auszeichnung). Durch sie lernte er die Grundsätze der Gesangspädagogik von Martienssen und Lohmann kennen, die für seine spätere Lehrtätigkeit prägend wurden. Künstlerische Impulse erhielt Michael Gehrke von Arleen Auger, Elisabeth Schwarzkopf, Aldo Baldin, Lore Fischer, Pavel Lisitian, Thomas Thomaschke, Leonard Hokanson, und Helmut Rilling. Über sieben Jahre begleitete Nicolai Gedda Michael Gehrkes künstlerischen Werdegang.
Seit fünfzehn Jahren bereits kümmert sich Michael Gehrke in der akademischen Lehre um den sängerischen Nachwuchs und gibt das Wissen seiner Lehrer und die Erfahrungen aus der eigenen künstlerischen und pädagogischen Arbeit weiter. Seine Schüler singen an zahlreichen deutschsprachigen Theatern, wie etwa Wiener Staatsoper, Deutsche Oper Berlin, Opernhaus Zürich. Sie sind als Konzertsänger international höchst erfolgreich (CDs bei Sony Classical und Harmonia Mundi) und widmen sich der pädagogischen Arbeit. Zwei seiner Schüler, Absolventen des Konzertexamens, sind bereits selbst Professoren und lehren in China und Korea.
